The burden

For a number of birth related measures Wakefield is not significantly different to the national average and compares favourably to other similar areas; there are fewer stillbirths, babies born with a low birth weight, infant deaths and teenage conceptions than expected, given the socio-economic characteristics and high levels of some risk factors.

For birth related measures related to poor health outcomes, Wakefield does not compare favourably; having high rates of smoking in pregnancy and low rates of breastfeeding.  Further information on maternal behaviours that impact on the health and wellbeing of both mum and baby can be found here.
